I should have taken the hint when Nancy and I were getting unnecessarily friendly.We were spending more time after school waiting back to discuss no-matter-what;we were otherwise talking on the phone;basically together all the damned time!
She was perfect as a human.For a 15 yr old,she had a super brain,with an invincible vivacity.A formidable debator,an excellent orator,a "true" friend,a perfect agony-aunt,an encouraging fellow squad-prefect,a baby( in laughter and in built!),a loving sister,an ideal student,a paradigm of "to good to be true" kind of a soul!She was Nancy!My new-found pal...
I didn't get to know Nancy for more than 6 months.The short time that we spent together at school was the only memories i am left with now.We have represented our school at numerous inter-school competitions,matches,and activities.Thats what really brought us close.The quest to live with enthusiasm...
I had no clue as to what lady life was having in store for all of us when Nancy came home one day.I hadn't invited one single classmate(ok...friend) over to my home. cause I never felt that close to anyone.Nancy came home one day(20th october) all of a sudden, and just ordered me to assure her a gala time.Gala it was!prank-calls;Pissing the king-kong in my maha apartment(the old cranky fella!);watched movies;went for a ride on the dokku bandi(same old kinetic!);made up wierd things called poems!man!!
We were assured this was something to last us a lifetime.Its that feeling that a child gets when he catches sight of his mother after being lost in a fete for hours...complete assurance!
Exact a week later.27 october.The day i lost doogie(aussi). Early in the morning,getting ready for schol...While i am holding oil in one hand, a comb in the other,black ribbons beween my lips, struggling to tie my hair, the phone rings.I can't take the call!Yell at mom to pick up the phone...She yells back asking me to finish it soon,coz it was some one for me.Saphrona??Why now?we were gonna meet in school anyway!I say hello!she goes,checked the paper??i laughed!Yea right!She says..check page 3.deccan.and the line gets cut.I am cursing her coz i was sure that was another of her tricks to make me write the "news for the day".I did check the paper.
I don't remember what exactly was written.Family of three-crushed under a tipper.driver flees.bodies crushed beyond recognition.8 wheels over 3 bodies.A lady of nearly 40 yrs.A man between 40-45.A young gal of about 13-15 yrs.She was recognised because of the party gown she was wearing that evening.I had spoken to her just last evening.My throat went dry.I felt a sharp pain.I wanted to re-read it,couldn't.some wierd liquid swelled my eyes.the world was swirling real fast now.i didn't know what to say,nor was i able of thinkin how to say what i wanted to say...
It was nancy's brother that survived the mishap as he stayed back with his grand parents as he was not very particular about attendance.Nancy forced her parents to leave early as school was important and she had to sleep early to rise early!!ha!I only got to see her face at the church, i knew it was her only because the post mortem confirmed her identity, otherwise i could never have...
I should have taken the hint when she and i got unnecessarily close...it has been that way.Little wonder i feel extreme emotions when daddy says,"vinaash kaale vipareetha budhdhee"...i am better at taking hints now.
Nancy for me is like a zephyr.That was the intention behind this post.Forgive me for the stark contrast between the poetic title and the unpoetic realty...As softly she came...as silently she passed (away)...My taurean Zephyr...
